Character:Spuhler's character is one of a kind. Prior to joining the Robert Morris University men’s lacrosse team, he spent four years of active duty with the United State Marine Corp, where he was stationed in Japan for 14 months. After serving his country he came to school where he has juggled the roles of a Division I athlete, scholar and as a member of the ROTC in his earlier years. He has been a role model to his team by sponsoring recruits and helping his freshmen adjust to their new surroundings while imposing a workman’s like ethic to the team.
Community:Spuhler has played an active role in the community over the past few years. During this past Christmas, Spuhler and several teammates organized a carnival on campus for 45 children from the Bradley House, an organization that watches over children from abusive families. The team set up games, arts and crafts and even dressed up as Santa for the Children during the special event. Currently, he is organizing a new chapter for Americans Supporting Americans (ASA) in Moon Township, Pa., to foster an armed forces unit. The ASA collects care packages from the community and sends them overseas to needy troops.
Competition:Spuhler has helped the team grow from a brand new Division I program in 2005 to a competitive team in the Colonial Athletic Association today. He has played in 38 career games and has amassed one goal, 39 ground balls and four caused turnovers from the midfield position. He has served as captain in each of his four seasons and has been awarded the team’s all-time captains award in 2007.
