Classroom:Josh is a Peace and Conflict Studies major and also has fulfilled all of the Colgate pre-med requirements. He currently has a 3.77 overall GPA, while his science GPA for his pre-med requirements is 3.82. Has been inducted into Phi Beta Kappa Honors Society. Has won Dean’s Award for Academic Excellence in every semester with at least a 3.3 GPA in four courses and been a member of the Patriot League Honor Roll in each of his three seasons. Also a member of the Phi Eta Sigma National First-Year Honors Society. Josh has earned at least a 3.67 GPA in all seven semesters. Earned a 4.0 GPA in the spring of 2007 during lacrosse season and was one of just seven student athletes to do so. Would like to volunteer or work abroad following graduation.
Character:Back is a three-year letterwinner for the men’s lacrosse team. An unselfish player and exemplary team leader, he has helped mentor the younger players for each of the past two seasons. He comes out to practice every day and works hard not only to help improve his game but the overall team. Head Coach Jim Nagle says “Honestly, Josh Back is the nicest kid I’ve every met and maybe ever will meet. He is a very team oriented person, incredibly unselfish, and a great person to be around and have on a team. I have no doubt in my mind that he will be very successful.”
Community:Back is involved in various organizations on campus and also outside of the Colgate community. He is currently working as a volunteer to teach literacy to refugees who have been relocated to nearby Utica, N.Y. He was the head organizer and promoter in a program at Colgate called “Sierra Leone’s Refugee All Stars Experience.” The event was a week-long series of events aimed at increasing awareness and action regarding the world refugee crisis. The events at the Sierra Leone Refugee All Stars Experience that he was responsible for organizing included documentaries shows, a reception and benefit concert which raised $2,000 for refugee relief. He also was a major part of facilitating the $11,000 in fundraising necessary to put on the event. He communicated with an agent and booked the band and publicized the week-long event on campus. Also on campus, Back served as a Townhouse Community Coordinator for residential life his junior year. He helped to organize educational and social community events for 20-plus residents. He also promoted inter-community dialogue and helped mediate community conflicts. Worked in the Colgate Athletics Department helping facilitate promotional activities and coordinate athletic events.
Competition:Back has become a regular player for the Raiders over the past two seasons. He played in 13 games in 2007, scoring six goals and registering five assists on a talented second midfield line. He is expected to see a lot of minutes at attack this spring after a strong fall season for the Raiders. Will battle for a starting nod in an attack that returns 75 percent of its scoring from last season. Scored a goal for the Raiders in the Patriot League Championship against Navy last season. Has developed his game very well during his career at Colgate and has taken on a leadership role both on and off the field.
